In December 2021 the Indian fashion giant Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd experienced a major security breach. A hacking group gained unauthorized access to the company servers and attempted to extort a ransom. After the company refused to pay the attackers leaked a massive database containing specific details of approximately 5.4 million customers and employees. The compromised information included personal identification details and transaction history. Technical analysis revealed that passwords were stored using the insecure MD5 hashing algorithm making them vulnerable to cracking. The leak significantly impacted the retail sectors digital security reputation in India.
