In late 2014 the popular skin care community Acne.org suffered a significant data breach. The incident resulted in the unauthorized exposure of approximately 700 thousand user records. The leaked data included sensitive member details such as usernames email addresses IP addresses and dates of birth. Additionally the breach compromised passwords stored as MD5 hashes with salts. The information was subsequently found in open access across various hacking forums and data repositories highlighting the vulnerability of community driven health platforms to cyber attacks.
