In October 2013 Adobe suffered a massive security breach affecting approximately 153 million accounts. The attackers gained access to a backup server containing internal customer record systems. The primary issue was the use of symmetric encryption instead of hashing for passwords which allowed researchers to decrypt large numbers of credentials easily. The data included customer IDs usernames and password hints in plain text format making the breach one of the most significant historical security incidents.
