In May 2016 the French video game developer Amplitude Studios suffered a significant data breach affecting its official community forum. The incident resulted in the unauthorized access and exposure of a database containing information for approximately 143000 registered users. The breach was facilitated by vulnerabilities in the vBulletin forum software which allowed attackers to extract sensitive member details. Exposed data included usernames, email addresses, IP addresses, dates of birth, and salted MD5 password hashes characteristic of the vBulletin platform. This incident highlighted the risks associated with legacy forum software and the targeting of gaming communities by cybercriminals looking for credential stuffing opportunities.
