In February 2020 the online gaming platform AnimeGame suffered a significant security breach resulting in the exposure of user data. The incident impacted approximately 1.4 million registered subscribers. The compromised information included private user details such as email addresses and full names alongside passwords stored as salted MD5 hashes. This type of cryptographic storage is considered weak by modern standards potentially allowing attackers to decrypt passwords through brute force or rainbow table attacks. The breach highlights vulnerabilities in legacy hashing algorithms and the importance of robust data protection measures for gaming communities.
