About this leak
In approximately 2016 the popular anime recommendation and social platform Anime Planet suffered a data breach that exposed the personal information of about 369000 users. The incident involved an unauthorized access to the database resulting in the compromise of sensitive member details. The leaked data included email addresses, usernames, IP addresses, and dates of birth. Security analysis revealed that older accounts were protected by weak MD5 hashes without salt while more recent accounts utilized the stronger BCRYPT hashing algorithm. This vulnerability allowed attackers to potentially decrypt many of the older passwords stored in the system.
