In April 2019 the ApexSMS cloud platform also known as MobileDrip suffered a significant data exposure incident. The breach originated from an unsecured database that allowed public access to a massive repository of marketing and SMS records. The exposed data contained highly sensitive personally identifiable information belonging to approximately 80 million users. Security researchers discovered the open instance which included details such as full names and contact information. This incident highlights the severe risks associated with misconfigured cloud storage and the large scale collection of consumer data for mobile marketing purposes.
