In 2021 AppleInsider experienced a significant data breach affecting its registered user base. A partial database dump was leaked on various hacking forums containing sensitive information for approximately 890000 users. The incident exposed personal identifiers and security credentials. Analysis of the leaked material indicates that the breach likely originated from a vulnerability in the forum software or a database misconfiguration allowing unauthorized access. The exposed passwords were encrypted using the outdated and insecure MD5 hashing algorithm which is highly susceptible to cracking and brute force attacks.
