The Israel State Archives archives.gov.il suffered a significant data breach in late 2023 following a cyberattack on the hosting provider CityBook. The incident was attributed to the pro-Palestinian hacking group known as Anonymous Sudan. The hackers managed to exfiltrate a large volume of sensitive data including personal information of users who requested historical documents. The breach exposed details from approximately 2020 through 2023. The archive website was temporarily taken offline to prevent further unauthorized access and to conduct a forensic investigation into the security failure.
