In December 2019 the online legal services marketplace Avvo suffered a significant data exposure. A database containing records of approximately 4 million users was published on a popular hacking forum. The breach included personal identifiers and login security credentials. The exposed data was subsequently utilized by malicious actors for extortion campaigns and phishing attempts targeting the legal community. Despite multiple attempts by security researchers to contact the company regarding the vulnerability and the leaked dataset there was no official confirmation or timely response from the organization at the time of discovery.
