In approximately 2008 the website Babynames.com experienced a data breach that resulted in the exposure of user information. The incident involved the compromise of 846 thousand records containing email addresses and salted MD5 hashed passwords. Although the breach occurred a decade prior it only became widely known in October 2018 when the data surfaced in the public domain. The company confirmed that the hack took place at least ten years before the public disclosure and stated that affected participants had been notified at the time of the original incident. The data was discovered by security researchers as part of a larger collection of historical breaches.
