In January 2016 the Animal Crossing community forum known as Bell Tree Forums suffered a data breach involving approximately 97600 user accounts. The incident exposed sensitive member information including email addresses and usernames. The passwords affected were stored using the vBulletin hashing algorithm which is considered weak by modern security standards. This breach highlights the risks associated with legacy forum software and the targeting of niche gaming communities by malicious actors seeking to harvest credentials for credential stuffing attacks.
