In July 2015 the online community for bird photography enthusiasts BirdPhotographers.net suffered a data breach. The incident involved the unauthorized access and exposure of the forum user database. The breach was attributed to vulnerabilities in the vBulletin forum software which was a common target for hackers at that time. The leaked data included sensitive user information such as usernames and email addresses along with salted hashes of passwords. This exposure put members at risk of credential stuffing attacks and phishing attempts targeting the wildlife photography community.
