About this leak
In September 2014 a massive database containing nearly 5 million credentials was posted on a Russian cryptocurrency forum. The leak primarily consisted of Gmail addresses and passwords. While initial reports caused significant alarm regarding a potential Google breach research later suggested the data was likely a collection of credentials harvested over several years through phishing attacks and malware rather than a direct compromise of Google servers. Many accounts were found to be old or inactive at the time of publication.
