BitTorrent

In January 2016 the official BitTorrent user forum was compromised due to a security vulnerability in the IP.Board software. Hackers successfully accessed the underlying database containing sensitive member information. The technical analysis revealed that the forum stored passwords using the SHA1 hashing algorithm with a salt which is considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to cracking. This breach exposed the personal details of over thirty four thousand users including their unique identifiers and network information. The incident highlighted significant risks for users who reused the same credentials across other platforms.
