In August 2022 the BookCrossing community experienced a significant data breach affecting approximately 1.5 million users. The incident occurred due to the exposure of a legacy database backup dating back to January 2013. The leaked information included sensitive personal details such as plain text passwords and full names. This security failure highlights the risks of maintaining unsecured historical backups on public facing servers. The compromised data originated from a snapshot of the service taken nearly nine years prior to its discovery.
