Bank Syariah Indonesia BSI suffered a massive ransomware attack and subsequent data leak in May and June 2023. The incident was attributed to the LockBit ransomware group which claimed to have stolen 1.5 terabytes of corporate and customer data after negotiations failed. The data breach exposed personal details of approximately 15 million customers and employees including sensitive financial records and contact information. The hackers released the database on a dark web forum after the bank refused to pay the 20 million dollar ransom demand. This incident is considered one of the largest cyberattacks in the history of the Indonesian banking sector affecting the countrys largest Sharia compliant lender.
