BTC-E

In October 2014 the cryptocurrency exchange BTC-E suffered a significant security breach resulting in the exposure of approximately 568000 user accounts. The incident involved unauthorized access to the platform database where attackers managed to extract sensitive user information including login credentials and financial statuses. The breach was particularly notable during the early years of the crypto industry highlighting vulnerabilities in digital asset trading platforms. The exposed data included hashed passwords which put users at risk of account takeovers if they reused the same credentials on other services. This event remains one of the historical security incidents in the evolution of Bitcoin trading infrastructure.
