In November 2019 the Russian forum BurnerClub involved in waste oil heating systems suffered a data breach. The incident led to the exposure of sensitive information belonging to approximately 21 thousand community members. The leaked data set includes electronic mail addresses, unique account nicknames, and internet protocol addresses. Furthermore the breach compromised user passwords which were stored using the MD5 hashing algorithm combined with a salt. This security failure potentially allows for unauthorized access to user accounts through credential cracking techniques.
