In February 2014 the discussion forum Cannabis.com suffered a significant data breach when an unauthorized party gained access to the community database. The incident resulted in the exposure of sensitive information belonging to over 227 thousand registered users. The leaked data set included private forum messages, email addresses, usernames, and dates of birth. Additionally, technical identifiers such as IP addresses and geolocation data were compromised. Security analysis revealed that user passwords were stored using the MD5 hashing algorithm with a salt which is considered weak by modern standards and susceptible to cracking.
