In March 2016 the developer of The Witcher and Cyberpunk series CD Projekt Red suffered a major data breach involving their official forums. Hackers gained unauthorized access to the database containing millions of user accounts. The incident resulted in the exposure of sensitive user credentials and forum activity. The technical cause was linked to vulnerabilities in the forum software which allowed attackers to dump the database containing salted MD5 password hashes and personal identifiers. This breach significantly impacted the gaming community and highlighted security weaknesses in legacy forum platforms used by major studios.
