In October 2021 the cryptocurrency price tracking website CoinMarketCap suffered a security incident resulting in the exposure of over 3.1 million unique user email addresses. The data was discovered being traded on various underground hacking forums. While the company acknowledged that the list of email addresses correlated with their user base they maintained that no passwords or other sensitive financial data were compromised during this specific event. The incident is primarily classified as an email leak which significantly increases the risk of targeted phishing attacks and social engineering for the affected cryptocurrency investors.
