In July 2021 the cryptocurrency exchange platform known as CoinPayex suffered a significant data security incident. The breach resulted in the exposure of sensitive user credentials including email addresses and passwords. The incident impacted approximately 620 thousand users who had registered on the platform for digital asset transactions. The data was subsequently circulated within cybercrime forums highlighting the risks associated with storing credentials on smaller crypto trading platforms during that period.
