In September 2019 the cybersecurity firm Comodo suffered a data breach affecting its official community forums. The incident was caused by a misconfiguration in the vBulletin forum software which allowed unauthorized access to the database. The leaked information included sensitive user details for approximately 170000 accounts. The exposed passwords were encrypted using the weak MD5 hashing algorithm making them vulnerable to cracking attempts. This breach highlighted risks associated with legacy forum software and the importance of robust hashing methods for protecting user credentials within technical communities.
