In July 2019 the popular hacking and cracking forum Cracked.to suffered a significant data breach when a rival hacker group successfully compromised its database. The incident resulted in the exposure of sensitive information belonging to over 321 thousand registered members. The leaked data contained a wealth of information including high entropy bcrypt password hashes which are difficult to crack but not impossible. Additionally the breach exposed internal private messages exchanged between users which could potentially reveal further illicit activities or personal details. The source of the intrusion was attributed to a competing community in the underground hacking scene looking to discredit and dismantle the platform. The total impact included unique email addresses and technical identifiers linked to the forum participants.
