In October 2016 the French video sharing platform Dailymotion suffered a significant security breach resulting in the exposure of approximately 85 million user records. The incident was attributed to an external attack on the service infrastructure. The compromised data included email addresses and usernames along with passwords protected by the bcrypt hashing algorithm which provides a high level of security compared to older methods. Despite the encryption the scale of the leak posed a serious risk to users especially those reusing passwords across multiple platforms.
