In May 2016 the DashHacks website which focused on gaming news and console modifications suffered a significant data breach. The security incident resulted in the exposure of a database containing approximately 450000 user records. The compromised information included member email addresses usernames and IP addresses. Most critically the breach included passwords stored as salted MD5 hashes which are susceptible to cracking using modern hardware. The incident highlighted vulnerabilities in older forum software and hashing algorithms used by niche community sites during that era.
