In December 2018 DataCamp experienced a significant data breach affecting records dating back to January 2017. The incident resulted in the exposure of approximately 760 thousand unique user accounts. The compromised information included personal identifiers and security credentials. Investigations revealed that the data was subsequently offered for sale on various darknet marketplaces in 2019 before becoming more widely circulated within the cybercriminal community. The breach primarily targeted individuals utilizing the platform for data science and programming education.
