In July 2015 the popular video game news and community portal Destructoid suffered a security breach. An unauthorized party gained access to the site database resulting in the exposure of personal information for approximately 72 thousand registered members. The incident involved the extraction of sensitive account details including email addresses and salted MD5 password hashes. The breach became public after the data was traded and eventually shared on various hacking forums highlighting vulnerabilities in older hashing algorithms used at the time.
