About this leak
In July 2016 the official Dota 2 community forum was compromised resulting in a significant data breach affecting nearly 2 million accounts. The incident occurred due to vulnerabilities in the vBulletin forum software which allowed attackers to gain unauthorized access to the database. The exposed information included email addresses IP addresses and usernames. Notably approximately 1.4 million passwords were found to be stored in plain text while the remaining passwords were saved as MD5 hashes with salts. This breach highlighted the risks associated with outdated forum software and poor password storage practices in the gaming community.
