In July 2023 a massive data breach involving the Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs Population and Civil Registry Office known as Dukcapil was reported. A threat actor offered a database allegedly containing 337 million records on a dark web forum. The compromised information includes highly sensitive personal details such as National Identification Numbers NIK, full names, places and dates of birth, residential addresses, and family card numbers. While the full extent of the breach remains under investigation, cybersecurity researchers confirmed that a significant portion of the data is valid, posing a severe risk of identity theft and financial fraud for Indonesian citizens.
