The popular educational platform Edmodo suffered a significant data breach in May 2017 when an unauthorized party gained access to the systems. The incident resulted in the exposure of approximately 77 million user accounts. The stolen data included usernames, email addresses, and salted bcrypt hashed passwords. Security researchers identified that the breach occurred through a vulnerability in the platform infrastructure, leading to the database being sold on darknet marketplaces like Dream Market. While the passwords were encrypted, the scale of the leak posed a high risk for credential stuffing attacks against students and teachers worldwide.
