In 2017 the Faceit e-sports competitive gaming platform suffered a significant data security incident. This breach resulted in the exposure of sensitive information belonging to approximately 230000 registered users. The compromised data included user email addresses and passwords stored in plain text format. The exact method of intrusion or the identity of the threat actors responsible for the unauthorized access remains publicly unconfirmed. This incident highlighted critical vulnerabilities in how user credentials were managed on the platform at that time.
