In 2020 the online cinema platform Festival Scope experienced a data breach that resulted in the exposure of approximately 109 thousand user records. The incident involved the leakage of sensitive user account information which was subsequently shared on various underground hacking forums. The data set contained personal identification details and security credentials. Analysis of the breach revealed that the passwords were stored using the SHA1 hashing algorithm with salt which is now considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to brute force attacks. This leak allowed unauthorized parties to potentially access user accounts and personal viewing preferences associated with various international film festivals hosted on the platform.
