The incident occurred between August 17 and August 19 2024 when an unauthorized third party gained access to internal systems using two newly created customer accounts. The attacker accessed sensitive personal information including full names and other government issued identifiers. The company detected the unauthorized activity on August 19 and immediately terminated the access. Fidelity has since stated that the breach did not involve access to actual customer accounts or funds but rather focused on personal identification data stored within the system. Impacted individuals were notified and offered credit monitoring services to mitigate potential identity theft risks.
