In July 2018 the photography community 500px experienced a major security breach when an unauthorized party gained access to the systems. The incident resulted in the compromise of personal data for approximately 14.8 million users. Investigations revealed that the breach occurred due to a vulnerability in the platform infrastructure. Leaked information included personal details and account credentials stored as MD5 and bcrypt password hashes. The company discovered the breach in early 2019 and forced a password reset for all affected accounts to mitigate further unauthorized access.
