In August 2022 the Portuguese national airline TAP Air Portugal suffered a significant cyberattack orchestrated by the Ragnar Locker ransomware group. The attackers successfully bypassed security measures to exfiltrate sensitive customer data from the airlines internal systems. After the company refused to meet ransom demands the hackers published the stolen information on their darknet leak site. The breach exposed the personal details of approximately 1.5 million customers including sensitive demographic and contact information. This incident highlighted vulnerabilities in the aviation sector infrastructure and resulted in a massive data disclosure that affected passengers globally.
