In February 2023 the French football statistics website Footballdatabase.eu suffered a data breach that resulted in the exposure of user information. The incident involved approximately 66 thousand records being published on various hacking forums. The compromised data included sensitive information such as usernames, email addresses, and passwords stored as MD5 hashes. This method of password storage is considered weak by modern security standards making users vulnerable to credential cracking and subsequent account takeovers across other platforms if passwords were reused.
