About this leak
In February 2014 the Forbes media website suffered a significant cyberattack attributed to the Syrian Electronic Army. The attackers gained access to the WordPress database and other internal systems. This breach resulted in the compromise of over one million user accounts. The hackers claimed this was a response to Forbes coverage of Syria. Beyond data theft the attackers also defaced the website and published fake articles. The exposed information included email addresses and passwords stored as WordPress MD5 hashes which were vulnerable to cracking.
