In 2015 the popular Russian freelance platform Freelance.ru suffered a significant security breach. An unauthorized party managed to compromise the database resulting in the exposure of personal information belonging to approximately 180000 registered users. The incident occurred during a period of increased targeting of professional networking sites in the region. The leaked data included sensitive contact details and account identifiers which were later circulated in the public domain and underground forums. This breach highlighted vulnerabilities in the platforms storage of user credentials and personal identifiers at that time.
