About this leak
In July 2016 the anime streaming service Funimation experienced a significant data breach affecting approximately 2.5 million user accounts. The incident involved the exposure of sensitive database records including account credentials and personal details. Investigations revealed that the leaked data contained user identifiers along with SHA-1 hashed passwords with salt. Security researchers noted that while the passwords were hashed the use of older cryptographic algorithms posed a risk to users with simple passwords. The breach was primarily attributed to vulnerabilities in the web application infrastructure which allowed unauthorized access to the backend storage systems.
