In late 2011 a significant data breach hit the Chinese gaming portal 17173 as part of a massive wave of leaks affecting the Chinese internet ecosystem. The incident exposed approximately 7.5 million user accounts. The data was stored and subsequently leaked in a completely unencrypted plaintext format which allowed immediate access to user credentials.
