In October 2015 the online gaming forum GamerzPlanet suffered a significant data breach. An unauthorized party gained access to the platform database resulting in the exposure of approximately 1.2 million user accounts. The leaked information contained sensitive user details including email addresses and IP addresses. Furthermore the passwords were stored as salted MD5 hashes but the implementation was considered weak by security standards making it relatively easy for attackers to crack and retrieve plain text credentials. The breach highlighted vulnerabilities in legacy hashing algorithms used by niche gaming communities at that time.
