In May 2022 the Russian educational platform GeekBrains experienced a significant data breach. The incident came to light when a database containing user information was posted on a popular hacking forum. While a threat actor claimed to possess records for over 6 million users the publicly released sample contained approximately 213000 unique entries. The company officially confirmed the security incident on June 1. The leaked data includes personal identifiers of students and employees which could be used for targeted phishing and social engineering attacks. The breach likely occurred due to a vulnerability in the platforms backend infrastructure allowing unauthorized access to internal databases.
