In August 2016 the professional networking platform Geekedin.net suffered a significant data exposure when an unsecured MongoDB database was discovered online. The database contained over 8 million profiles scraped from LinkedIn and other sources. The exposed information included professional details such as work history and skills alongside personal contact information. The incident highlighted the risks associated with data scraping and improper database configuration which left sensitive professional data accessible to anyone with the database IP address without authentication.
