In late 2020 a massive data exposure occurred involving the GetContact caller identification application. The incident was the result of large scale automated scraping or parsing of the platform database. GetContact functions by synchronizing and aggregating contact lists from its global user base. This specific event exposed the relationship between phone numbers and the names assigned to them by various users in their private address books. The leak primarily impacted individuals within the Russian Federation and neighboring regions revealing approximately 20 million unique phone numbers and over 44 million contact name associations. This type of data exposure facilitates social engineering and targeted phishing attacks by allowing malicious actors to identify individuals based on their peer assigned contact names.
