In 2016 the software development platform GitHub experienced a massive data collection event through automated parsing techniques. An external actor systematically scraped the platform to aggregate publicly accessible user profiles and repository metadata. The incident resulted in the compilation of approximately two million records containing user identifiers and profile details. While this was not a traditional breach of private servers or encrypted databases it demonstrated the scale at which public information can be harvested and consolidated into a searchable leak format for malicious use in social engineering or targeted attacks.
