In September 2022 the Spanish community forum ForodelGuardiaCivil dedicated to the Civil Guard experienced a significant data breach. The incident led to the exposure of sensitive information belonging to approximately 233 thousand registered accounts. The compromise included personal details and technical identifiers. Investigations revealed that the absence of CAPTCHA mechanisms on the registration page contributed to a high volume of bot-generated accounts within the dataset. Password security was compromised as the site utilized the vBulletin hashing algorithm which is vulnerable to modern cracking techniques. The leaked data originated from a database compromise allowing unauthorized access to the user management system.
