In early 2023 HDFC Bank one of Indias largest private sector lenders was involved in a significant data security incident. A threat actor claimed to have accessed and leaked sensitive customer information on a popular cybercrime forum. The breach reportedly impacted approximately 3.2 million customers. The compromised data included personal identifiable information such as full names email addresses physical residential addresses and mobile phone numbers. While the bank initially denied any security breach the data was widely circulated within the dark web community posing significant phishing and identity theft risks to the affected individuals.
