About this leak
In early 2014, the digital marketing and business services provider Hibu formerly known as Yell was identified as having a significant security vulnerability. Security researchers discovered an unsecured MongoDB database that exposed a massive volume of sensitive user information. The data exposure was caused by a misconfiguration of the cloud storage environment which allowed public access without any authentication. The leaked records contained detailed personal and business contact information from their global customer base including users in the United Kingdom and United States. This incident highlighted the risks of improper database management within large scale digital advertising firms.
